SHOP TOURS/SAWDUST SESSION DETAILS

Saturday, January 20, 2017 Shop Tour, 10AM - Noon
Duke Herrero's Shop at 23 Fallen Leaf Terrace, Orinda

Duke's home shop was completed about 3 years ago.  It was planned as a garage shop until Duke's son in law suggested a freestanding shop at the back of the lot.  Duke was thrilled, his wife not so much, but the result is a tasteful 650 sq. ft. building with a patio area for working outside.

Orinda's tedious permit process left Duke plenty of time to research design ideas from over a hundred shops. Working with a friendly contractor, Duke did lots of the work himself, including PVC for dust control, copper piping for compressed air and all of the wiring after the service panel. Oh, and the insulation, trim, wood flooring and shop-built cabinets.

The shop is light and airy, but the walls conceal numerous noise suppression features including alternating studs on outside walls with continuous insulation, better insulated windows, suspended drywall to minimize sound vibration to the studs and an isolated equipment room with a weatherproof solid-core door.

We will all be saying, "I wish I thought of that."

Refreshments: Coffee, cookies and donuts will be available.

  1. Highway 24 to Orinda.
  2. Take Exit 9 and follow the signs for Orinda Village/Richmond.
  3. Merge onto Camino Pablo.
  4. Turn right on Miner Road and continue straight onto Lombardy Lane.
  5. Turn right on Dalewood Drive.
  6. Turn left on Fallen Leaf Terrace to No. 23 on the left.

Saturday, February 17, 20187 Shop Tour, 10AM - Noon
Laney College 900 Fallon Street, Wood Technology Facility, Oakland.

Join Rosendo Del Toro Solis for a tour of the Laney College Wood Technology Shop. One of the unique new features at Laney since our visit in November 2016 is their sophisticated CNC machine (one of two in the US). Mike Noyes, our most recent Bill Tarleton Memorial Scholarship winner, is one of the principal students involved in getting this sophisticated machine fully integrated into the student training program. Gives one even more reasons (if you even needed more) to make the tour.

Directions: The College is across the street from the Oakland Museum of California, close to the Lake Merritt BART Station. Since parking in the area may be limited, traveling via BART is suggested. For drivers, there is metered public parking on the street, at the Oakland Museum of California, and the Convention Center.

VIA BART: Take the train to Lake Merritt BART station. From the East Bay change trains at MacArthur Station. Walk 1 1/2 blocks east on 8th Street to Laney College entrance at 900 Fallon Street. Follow campus directions to the Wood Technology Shop in Building G Room 150

VIA PRIVATE AUTO: Take Jackson St exit from I-980, left on Jackson to 7th St, right on 7th to Fallon St, left on Fallon St. to 10th St if parking at the Oakland Museum or the Convention Center. Walk to Laney College at 900 Fallon St. Follow campus directions to the Wood Technology Shop in Building G Room 150.

Memorial Flag Case Project

Since the 9/11 tragedy, the Diablo Woodworkers have channeled some of their woodworking passion into compassion for the families of fallen firefighters and law enforcement officers - the survivors of those who have given their last full measure in protecting others.

We honor those families with memorial flag cases that have been crafted from California (Claro) walnut and accented with silver maple corner splines. Each case is finished with Danish oil and buffed out to a smooth finish.

These memorial flag cases are provided to all law enforcement and firefighting units in the San Francisco Bay area. We are proud to have worked with over 100 families in the past 10 years and will continue to honor the fallen.

Gordon Fry, 925-685-1676 is the Chairperson for this project. Plans for these flag cases are on our club web site.
