DW Meeting, Michael Bray, Custom Woodworker and Teacher

Aug 14, 2019 ANNUAL SUMMER SOCIAL, 6-9 PM. PLEASANT HILL PARK, GREGORY AND CLEVELAND STS.

NEXT MEETING DETAIL

Michael BrayJUNE 12 2019 MEETING, MULTI-USE ROOM, 7-9 PM.
Michael Bray, Custom Woodworker and Teacher

Our June speaker is Michael Bray. He has provided his own write up and photos below.

From my early days in Art School to my current stint as a custom woodworker and teacher, I will cover some highlights, as well as a few war stories, particularly what it was like working for a super-wealthy client, but also including my years drawing for Woodwork magazine.

I trained as a Graphic Designer, but lost interest about the time I saw my first Garret Wade catalog! I worked in the paper industry, then as a handyman for a while. During this time I started submitting articles to woodworking magazines. Woodwork magazine ran my first article, then eventually hired me as their illustrator. I eventually became a full-time custom furniture maker, and all these years later am now teaching more than making. I teach at the Randall Museum in SF, the Crucible in Oakland, and at Facebook in Menlo Park. And just founded the Bay Area Spoon Carvers last year! Website: http://www.michaelbraydesign.com

PREVIOUS MEETING

MAY 8, 2019 MEETING, 112 ROOM, 7-9 PM.
Berkeley Mills CEO and Founder Gene Agress

Gene EgressGene Agress
CEO / Designer / Founding Craftsman / Partner

Gene Agress and Berkeley Mills are Bay Area icons. For the past thirty plus years Gene has built Berkeley Mills into one of the most successful and innovative custom furniture and cabinet shops in the country.  At the heart of Berkeley Mills' success are the very fundamentals of woodworking: beautiful design, solid joinery and exquisite craftsmanship. Indeed, Gene started his career as a woodworker, selling handmade wooden toys on the streets of Berkeley. This foundation of a business built on creating quality, custom made wares, remains to this day the guiding principle of Berkeley Mills.

SHOP TOURS/SAWDUST SESSION DETAILS

SATURDAY, JUNE 15, 2019 SHOP TOUR 10AM - NOON
Home Shop Tour of Steve Sowden, 1380 Brighton Drive, Tracy 95376. 619-379-5350

Our tour for June will be at the shop of Steve Sowden. Steve started woodworking about 24 years ago after discovering a Fine Woodworking magazine in a book store. He has been hooked ever since. When Steve lived in San Diego, where he started woodworking, he had several pieces entered in the Design in Wood Show. Steve had to take a 7 year hiatus due to work and has just gotten back into it the last couple of years. This is Steve's third garage shop and each one has become more refined to his needs. Steve admits to being bit of a tool and organization nut. He still works crazy hours so everything he makes takes time hence the desire for an efficient shop. The time spent produces excellent results. Steve lives in Tracy, so carpools are suggested.

Sorry, no pets or minor children due to liability issues.

Memorial Flag Case Project

Since the 9/11 tragedy, the Diablo Woodworkers have channeled some of their woodworking passion into compassion for the families of fallen firefighters and law enforcement officers - the survivors of those who have given their last full measure in protecting others.

We honor those families with memorial flag cases that have been crafted from California (Claro) walnut and accented with silver maple corner splines. Each case is finished with Danish oil and buffed out to a smooth finish.

These memorial flag cases are provided to all law enforcement and firefighting units in the San Francisco Bay area. We are proud to have worked with over 100 families in the past 10 years and will continue to honor the fallen.

Gordon Fry, 925-685-1676 is the Chairperson for this project. Plans for these flag cases are on our club web site.
