After graduating from California College of Arts and Crafts with a degree in sculpture and working as an artists assistant, Shawn Lovell started Shawn Lovell Metalworks in 1996 setting up shop in Oakland, California. Shawn specializes in making one-of-kind and commissioned work both commercial and residential using both traditional and modern forging techniques. Her work has ranged from large scale railings, gates, and arbors to fire screens and surrounds, lighting, furniture, hardware and much more. Shawn is going to discuss the creative process, since that unites all crafts people regardless of their medium. You can see more of her work at www.slmetalworks.com.
OCTOBER 8th 7-9 PM AT PHEC, ROOM 112 JOHN LAVINE, WOODWORK MAGAZINE
John Lavine has been involved in furniture and woodworking for more than 30 years as a maker, teacher, magazine editor and writer. In 1980 he started Kodama Woodworks, combining contemporary furniture with his training in Japanese woodworking. He has exhibited his work nationally and is a master member of the Baulines Craft Guild. He taught furniture making part-time at Laney College in Oakland, California, for seven years, and has been the editor of Woodwork magazine since 1997. John will share his thoughts on woodworking magazines, the challenges of producing a quality magazine, the direction various magazines are taking, the audiences they are trying to reach, and what the future may hold for those who look to these magazines for inspiration and enjoyment.
