MARCH 12th MEETING, 7-9 PM AT PHEC, ROOM 112
CHRIS HUNT, WOODEN KAYAKS

Chris Hunt worked in hi-tech for 25 years in a variety of product marketing roles for companies like Oracle, Adobe and Silicon Valley Bank but was fortunate enough to be able to leave that world behind in 2005. Self-taught, he now builds wooden kayaks and canoes in a one-man shop in San Carlos and his wife describes him as happy enough to be practically insufferable. Proving that a degree in English Lit does not prevent you from doing anything, Chris found that actually producing something with your hands is much better than marketing anything. His boats have been called "too nice to be put in the water" but like classic cars he believes wooden boats are made to be enjoyed. (www.sancarloswoodenboats.com if people want to check things out beforehand.)

APRIL 9th MEETING, 7-9 PM AT PHEC, ROOM 112
RON MENNINGS, CRAFT ART CONCEPTS

Ron says - I have been hobby woodworking for years (not very consistent or very good) but just dabbled, then about 5 or 6 years ago I got a small lathe (Jet mini) for Christmas and once I got the hang of the basics I just fell in love with it. Flat work requires too much forethought and detailed planning for my way of working but when I put a piece of wood on the lathe I can let the shape and design flow. I started my selling career by putting items on EBay and talking to friends and relatives; then I was visiting my girlfriend in San Francisco and walked through the street artist area at Justin Herman Plaza and asked how I could get into the program. I now sell my goods approximately 4 days a week and do 3 or 4 craft fairs throughout the year and am making a decent living. I have been in the Street Artist Program for just over 4 years now and it is going well. I have learned a lot about pricing, presentation, sales techniques, etc. - I still have a lot to learn but if I can give some pointers to your members it may be fun.

MARCH 15th SHOP TOUR, 9 AM -NOON
ROBERT BEAUCHAMP'S SHOP, 36343 COUNTY ROAD 13, WOODLAND, 530-662-6520

Robert Beauchamp, the speaker at the October, 2007 meeting will host the March Shop Tour at his shop and lumber mill in Woodland. Robert will have a log on the mill and will give us a short milling session. A tour of his wood storage barn will also be on the menu. Bring some money along as Robert has lots of wood that is dried and up for sale.

Let's carpool to this Shop Tour. How about meeting at the Adult School Parking Lot at 8 am!
Directions: Take I-680 North until it merges with I-80 East towards Sacramento. At Vacaville take I-505 North until you get to Country Road 14. Go right at the end of the off ramp and stay on Country Road 14 over I-5 (the road will have changed to Country Road 13 on its own) continue 2.25 miles East over I-5. The shop is on the right (South) side of the road, 1/4 mile East of County Road 96. The drive takes about forty minutes from Vacaville.

APRIL 19th SHOP TOUR, 9 AM -NOON
STAN ARMSTRONG'S SHOP, 356 VIRGINA HILLS DR., MARTINEZ, 925-787-6786

We visited Stan Armstrong's shop in 2006 when it was first erected. This is a built from the floor up shop and very well thought out. Many changes have taken place since it was first built. There is more equipment including a new 17 inch Grizzly Extreme Bandsaw. Things have been moved around to better accommodate the way Stan works and the projects he makes. The shop is evolving into a real first class woodworking venue. We may even find some shavings on the floor as Stan is taking Brian's Master's Class.
Directions: From I-680 take the Willow Pass exit and drive west on Willow Pass past Sun Valley Mall. Willow Pass becomes Taylor Blvd. after it crosses Contra Costa Blvd. Continue on Taylor about 5 lights to Pleasant Hill Rd. Turn right on Pleasant Hill Rd. Turn left at the Safeway store which is Virginia Hills Dr. Stan's house is on the right several blocks up Virginia Hills Dr.
