Diablo WoodworkersACTIVITIES. Club meetings at PHEC are the 2nd Wednesday of the month, 7-9pm and Shop Tours or Sawdust Sessions are the 3rd Saturday of the month, 9am-Noon.
July 9th MEETING, 7-9 PM AT PHEC, ROOM 112 JIM MARIEIRO, WOOD CARVER
Jim Marieiro started carving at the age of 12 for a merit badge in the Boy Scouts. By 16 he had carved a few dozen duck decoys for his own use and continued to carve various kinds of birds over the next 20 years. The late Mario Marchi, a famous carver from the Bay Area met Jim and took him under his wing and became his mentor. Jim started winning numerous awards at carving shows across the State. Jim is a Taxidermist by trade and his knowledge of anatomy served him well. About 8 years ago he started carving fish and entering those in competitions. He has won State and National awards for his fish carvings and is currently the volunteer wood carving teacher at the Pleasant Hill adult education center.
AUGUST 13th SUMMER SOCIAL AT THE PLEASANT HILL PARK
It is with heavy heart that we have had to move from the wonderful picnic area at the Viano Winery. Unfortunately we have outgrown the picnic and parking space. This year we will use the larger picnic space at the Pleasant Hill Park at the corner of Gregory and Cleveland in Pleasant Hill (diagonally across the street from the Pleasant Hill City Hall). There is plenty of parking in the lot right next to the picnic area entrance off Cleveland.
This year we are again having Back Forty cater the evening dinner at the Pleasant Hill Park, August 13th, 6-9 pm. Dinner is an All You Can Eat Barbecue with Pork Ribs, BBQ Chicken, Veggie Burgers, Tossed Green Salad, Potato Salad, BBQ Beans and Fresh (in season) Corn Coblettes. Viano Wine, soft drinks/water and plenty of ice cream with toppings will be provided. Dinner is from 6 to 9 p.m. and the date is Wednesday, August 13th.
Dinner cost is $25 per person (please no children). Send a check made out to the Diablo Woodworkers to Jeff Traeger, 6 Daisy Lane, Orinda CA 94563. Please sign up at the June or July meeting or better yet, send Jeff a check as soon as possible to help us get the head count for the dinner.
Door Prizes from local business and craft items from members.
We will have a table to show your woodworking projects. If the project are large there is plenty of ground to display the item. Looking forward to seeing another big gathering this year!
Directions to the Pleasant Hill Park: The park is about 10 city blocks north of the Adult School. There is no straight way to get there from the school however. It is suggested that those that normally go to the Adult Scholl from I-680 drive northbound on North Main in Walnut Creek passed Oak Park Blvd Over Pass and North Main changes to Contra Costa Blvd in Pleasant Hill. Turn left on Gregory and in one block turn right on Cleveland with a quick left into the parking lot next to the picnic area.
NEXT SHOP TOURS/SAWDUST SESSIONS
JULY 19th SHOP TOUR, 9 AM -NOON ROGER GILES'S SHOP, 2823 WISWALL DR., RICHMOND, 925-223-2517
This is one of the smaller DW shops. (Less than 240 square feet). The shop is detached from the house and well insulated so sound doesn't reach the house or the neighbors. Because of well thought out equipment placement most jobs can be done without moving tools at all or very little. Small power hand tools are stored in plastic tubs on shelves around the walls. Hand tools are hung on magnets inside three deep hinged overhead cabinets. Everything that can be hung above the equipment where it doesn't take up floor space is. Much of the assembly and finishing work is done outside under a 20 foot by 20 foot tent.
Directions: From Hwy. 80 take the Hilltop Drive off ramp. Take Hilltop Drive West (Toward the Bay). Drive in the left lane next to the center divider. At Shane drive make a "U" turn around the center divider and back track on Hilltop Drive to Moyers Road. Exit Hilltop Drive onto Moyers Road to the right. Go to the first stop sign and turn left onto Wiswall Drive. Proceed to the stop sign at the bottom of the hill which is O'Brien. While stopped at the stop sign look to your left and you will see 2823 Wiswall Drive. There is plenty of parking. The shop is through the carport at the left of the house.
AUGUST 16th SHOP TOUR, 9 AM -NOON GEORGE LUCIDO’S SHOP, 2 CEDAR LANE., ORINDA, 925-254-3659
We last toured George's shop in 2002. George's main area of interest is turning so his lathe has the prominent place in his shop but all the other tools are there in supporting role. You woodworkers who are thinking about turning or who are taking a turning class might want to check out his layout. For the ones who do square stuff there is plenty of George's other projects to see. George has made several classic furniture pieces which you can see in his house.
Directions: From Hwy 24 take the Orinda off ramp. Travel South on Moraga Way about 2 miles. Drive passed 2 churches on your left. Turn left at Hall Drive the second street past the churches. Travel up Hall Drive until you reach the traffic circle. Go around the circle to Donald Drive on the left. Drive on Donald Drive about one half mile to Cedar Lane on your left. #2 Cedar Lane is the first drive way on the right after the corner.

Announcing Diablo Woodworkers Summer Seminar, Week of July 14th, Featuring Brian Condran, Fundamental of Furniture Design
Brian needs no introduction to Diablo Woodworker members. His work speaks for itself. His training under James Krenov at the College of the Redwoods helped to develop his keen eye for design and his extraordinary craftsmanship.
Our Furniture Design seminar will be held during the week of July 14th. We will meet on three non successive days during the week. The one day breaks between sessions are designed to provided students with time to prepare for the next session. This is a "hands on" seminar and therefore we are limiting enrollment to 12 students.
Day One - Monday, July 14th 8:30 to 12:30 Brian will talk about the element of great design and how proportions, as well as the compilation of many small details, go in to creating an esthetically pleasing look. In addition, he will discuss wood selection, both veneers and solid wood, and the interplay between the wood and a project. Brian will introduce you to his design development process which involves a simple sketch, from which he scales his project, and then "quickie" full size cardboard three dimensional mock ups.
Student Assignment: select a project that you would like to build after the seminar and create some simple sketches that capture your ideas. If you have some wood that you intend to use for the project, then think about how the wood and the design influence one and other. There is no class on Tuesday, so that you have time to develop your material for class on Wednesday.
Day Two - Wednesday, July 16th 8:30 to 12:30 The principle focus of the second day will be a review of every student's project design. Each project review will stimulate more discussion on design and provide real examples of how and why.
Memorial Flag Case ProjectWe have Memorial Flag Cases, for a donation of $35 to the club, to families that have received a Military or Public Service Memorial Flag after the passing of a loved one. These cases will also be given out free to any local Fire or Police family member that is lost in the line of duty. Plans for these cases are on our club web site. Gordon Fry, 925-685-1676 is the Chairperson for this project. Call him if you know of someone that would like a Flag Case or would like some help building them.
Flag Cases were given to several local police and fire fighting families in the last couple of years. It is our honor to help in memories of these men who lost their lives in their community's service.
