Lloyd is one of the newer members of the Diablo Woodworkers. He has been woodworking for many years in a shop where he lived in San Francisco. Marketry is one of his latest interests. His Concord shop is a three car garage shop and does not share space with the cars! Lots of room and lots of tools. Lloyd has a multi use tool that planes and joints. This type of tool is becoming popular among our group. This is a great chance to meet Lloyd and his wife Lois, tour the shop and to see some great wood projects Lloyd has made and some wonderful art work Lois has done.
Directions: From Hwy. 680 take the Treat Blvd. off ramp East to Cowell Road. Turn right on Cowell and drive three blocks to Larwin Ave. Turn left on Larwin and drive 6 blocks to Shellbark Court. Turn right into Shellbark Court.

July 21th, SHOP TOUR, 9-12 NOON
BILL TARLETON CHAINSAW LUMBER MAKING AT PHEC, 925-939-8052

One of Bill Tarleton's hobbies is making lumber from our Urban Forest (City Trees). Several of the club members have made some very Fine Woodworking projects from Bill's lumber and bowl blank stash. If you are interested in how Alaskan Chainsaw Mills work be sure and come to this Sawdust Session. We should have some interesting wood for members to take home from this session. Be sure and bring Hearing Protection.

DW MEMBERS CAN HELP THE ADULT ED WOODSHOP

Each December a Crafts Fair/Sale is held at the Mt Diablo Adult Education facility in Pleasant Hill to raise awareness of the great classes held all year. The woodworking class has a booth at the event and the proceeds help provide tools for the woodshop tool crib. These tools are essential to help woodworker students with their many projects. You may not even be aware that the Diablo Woodworkers was originally formed from a group of Adult Ed Woodshop participants!

You can help by donating wood projects which would be sold at the fair. Some of you have completed projects, but don't have someone to give them to. Or, you could be looking for some new and different projects. Maybe you have tested some new techniques and don't have a use for your prototypes. Please consider a donation. Some ideas are: decorative boxes, toys of all kinds, notepad clipboards, puzzles, trivets, bird houses, bread boards, Christmas ornaments, and the list goes on.

Our inventory was depleted at last year's sale so our goal is to acquire about 100 items to put on sale at next December's fair. For convenience, bring your donations to the DW meetings held the second Wednesday of each month.

Doug StoweDiablo Woodworkers Summer Seminar
5 Day Class - July 30th through August 3rd

"Furniture Design and Construction"

with Doug Stowe - noted author and professional woodworker

Many of you know Doug from his books on Box Making and his many feature articles in Woodwork, Fine Woodworking and Woodworkers Journal magazines. Doug was here last summer for our Box Making seminars. Those attending gave him high marks for his teaching and woodworking skills and so we've invited him back to teach a five day class on furniture design and construction which will be held in the Mt. Diablo Adult Education woodshop, in Pleasant Hill, on July 30th through August 3rd.

This is a "hands on" class with lectures during a portion of the morning, focused on furniture design, and project instruction and student project building for the balance of the day. The featured furniture project is a child's rocking chair with a carved back rest. In addition to polishing up your furniture joinery skill, this class will teach you the fundamental of carving. As a supplement to the five days of lecture and instruction with Doug, Bob Barnett and Jeff Traeger will hold a two day open shop class in the Adult Ed shop to allow you to mill and rough cut your project wood before the class.

The class is limited to 16 participants, so make your reservation right away. Tuition includes a notebook full of the slides and notes from Doug's daily lectures plus lunch and snacks every day. Tuition is $275 for the five days with Doug and the two days for stock preparation. Jeff Traeger is accepting reservation by phone [925-254-3810] or just click here - to make your reservation by e-mail.

SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS

TOY Special Interest Group: Bring your finished toys to the meetings.

Ron Kersey delivered the 327 toys to the Monument Crisis Center on Tuesday December 5th and 327 toys to Christmas for Everyone on Thursday December 7th. 16 toys were donated to the Adult School Craft Sale in early December with the remaining 21 toys on display at the Martinez Jury Room. The project members completed 701 toys this year! Great Job Toy Makers! Plans are to start again early in January 2007 making toys.

The Toy Makers are Diablo Woodworker volunteers. They participate in two ways.
  1. As individuals making toys in their home work shops.
  • Build from your own plans or use plans available from the Toy Group
  • Use your own materials or we provide the materials
  1. As members of the Toy Group in weekly sessions.
  • A group of about 12 volunteers
  • Usually meets at the Mount Diablo Adult Education School
  • Build toys on a production basis.
What happens to the toys? All donated to charitable organizations. We are currently building for:
  • Monument Crisis Center
  • Christmas for Everyone
To volunteer or for additional information contact: Ronald Kersey, , 925 944-5471

Router/Shop Tips Special Interest Group - We had a great turnout with 17 people (many new faces) on a beautiful warm night. As promised, we discussed and demonstrated Router Basics using a router on a table (bench top) and then in a table. We discussed safety practices that must be used along with various methods of cutting rabbits, grooves and edges.

I brought out my latest project for show-n-tell which is a painter's "canvas carrier", made from red oak with walnut trimming. Cheryl provided her usual delicious brownies, coffee and lemonade.

Our next meeting will June 11th in John Summers' shop at 1672 Clayton Way, Concord @ 7pm. We hope to see you there and bring your good shop tips and/or ideas and also items for show-n-tell.

Don't forget your hearing protection! For more information call John Summers, 925-681-1407.

TURNING Special Interest Group: - Meetings in the Woodshop at Pleasant Hill Adult Ed. at 7pm the first Thursday of each month. To join in the Turning SIG call George Lucido at 925-254-3659. The meetings schedule is as follows:

June 2007 - Bill Tarleton will demonstrate how to make hollow vessels -those are the slim pots with a small hole that makes it impossible to turn the inside -BUT, using Bill's method he will show how it is done.

July 2007 - Vessel design. Jim Rodgers will lead a discussion on how to approach the perpetual problem of how to design your bowl or vessel, whether a salad bowl or a fancy segmented vessel -design is of prime concern.

Aug. 2007 - George Lucido will demonstrate how to get started making segmented vessels, This demonstration will include making a drawing, calculating the sizes required and how to cut and glue the segments.

Sept. 2007 - Jim Rodgers will continue with the necessary steps on how to do the assembly and finish turning of a segmented vessel.

Oct. 2007 - Sharpening your lathe tools including spindle gouges, scrapers, skews, and bowl gouges. TBD

Nov. 2007 - Bowl enhancement including how to fill cracks, use of color mixed with epoxy, use of Turquoise, etc. TBD

Dec. 2007 - Bill Tarleton will demonstrate how to turn a bowl which is bigger than the swing on the lathe. This is done off the end of the lathe using an auxiliary tool rest. This can't be done on all lathes but is a good method to learn for those of us that want to make a 24" Cesar salad bowl.

Jan. 2008 - Andrew Baxter will demonstrate how to do "off-center" turning. Using this method some very interesting shapes will evolve.

Metal Special Interest Group (Metalheads): The Metal SIG meetings are being planned for 2007. The meetings will be held at the Ygnacio High School Metal Shop the 3rd Thursday of each month, 7-9 pm. Except during the 2007 Summer months when the school is closed for renovation. July meeting will be at ViTec in Livermore, July meeting will be in San Francisco aboard the WWII submarine Pampanito, and the August meeting will be in Oakland at Bill Hund's shop. Anyone interested in adding metal work to their hobbies and join the Metal SIG needs to contact George Hawks, 510-222-1408, or email .

We have Memorial Flag Cases, for a donation of $35 to the club, to families that have received a Military or Public Service Memorial Flag after the passing of a loved one. These cases will also be given out free to any local Fire or Police family member that is lost in the line of duty. Plans for these cases are on our club web site. Gordon Fry, 925-685-1676 is the Chairperson for this project. Call him if you know of someone that would like a Flag Case or would like some help building them. Flag Case
