Diablo WoodworkersACTIVITIES. Club meetings at PHEC are the 2nd Wednesday of the month, 7-9pm and Shop Tours or Sawdust Sessions are the 3rd Saturday of the month, 9am-Noon.
DECEMBER 12th, 7-9 PM AT PHEC, ROOM 112 ANNUAL MEMBERS PROJECTS
Members that have finished a project this year should bring it in to Show and Tell. Even a photo will be welcome if the project is too big to bring in. All projects that are shown at this meeting will earn the woodworker a very special Holiday Gift.
The Toy Makers Project needs more Toys. If you don't have a project yet or if you do have a project, join the "2007 Challenge" and make Toys, not just one Toy but extra Toys for the Toy Project. The December meeting is the last chance to get the Toys into the 2007 Toy Project Holiday Gift giving.
Also if you can spare some special Holiday food, please bring it to the meeting to add to our annual social gathering with good cheer. Coffee and soft drinks will be served.
JANUARY 9th, 7-9 PM AT PHEC, ROOM 112 AL STEUNENBERG THOUGHTS ON WINDSOR CHAIR BUILDING
Al Steunenberg helped start the Diablo Woodworkers back in late 1996. The early meetings were held in his garage shop. Those early members got to see Al's work with knotty alder for picture frames and his unique inlays mimicking bear tracks and snake skins. Over the years Al has built exquisite furniture, boxes and accessories to fill more than one house. Now he is specializing on versions of Windsor Chairs after taking classes in New England and researching the chair designs from books to trips to Europe. Al plans to tell us about these chairs as a preliminary "shot in the arm" to, hopefully, a class at PHEC building Windsor Chairs.
NEXT SHOP TOURS/SAWDUST SESSIONS
January 19th, SHOP TOUR, 9:00 AM - NOON TOM HOWARD'S SHOP, 1550 HOMESTEAD AVE, WALNUT CREEK, 925-933-6011
The first Shop Tour of 2008 is being hosted by Tom Howard. Tom is mainly a Turner and his shop reflects his passion. Among the more unusual things about this shop is that it is located on the second floor of the house. Every thing that enters the shop must be carried up stairs or hoisted through a trap door in the shop floor. The trap door has been used frequently as Tom has as many lathes as most of us have clamps. He also has at least two of most every other tool. This tour is a must for Turners as Tom will show off some of the equipment and techniques he uses to do decorative turning. The Metalheads will be interested in the metal working equipment.
Directions: From I-680 take the Treat Blvd. off ramp and take Treat Blvd. East one short block and turn right onto Oak Rd. Turn left onto Walden Rd. Turn left at Cherry Ln. Turn right onto Seven Hills Ranch Rd. Turn right at Homestead Ave. It may be posted as a private Rd. 1550 Homestead Ave is up a long driveway to the left. Park along Homestead Ave and walk up the drive.

Router/Shop Tips Special Interest Group - Meetings at John Summers' Shop, 1672 Clayton Way, Concord, 925-681-1407, the Monday before DW meeting each month. No meeting in December.
Don't forget your hearing protection!
TURNING Special Interest Group: - Meetings in room 207 of the Woodshop at Pleasant Hill Adult Ed. at 7pm the first Thursday of each month. To join in the Turning SIG call George Lucido at 925-254-3659. The meetings schedule is as follows:
Dec. 2007 - Bill Tarleton will demonstrate how to turn a bowl which is bigger than the swing on the lathe. This is done off the end of the lathe using an auxiliary tool rest. This can't be done on all lathes but is a good method to learn for those of us that want to make a 24" Cesar salad bowl.
Jan. 2008 - Andrew Baxter will demonstrate how to do "off-center" turning. Some very interesting shapes will evolve using this method.
Metal Special Interest Group (Metalheads): The meetings will be held at the Ygnacio High School Metal Shop the 2nd Thursday of each month, 7-9 pm. Anyone interested in adding metal work to their hobbies and join the Metal SIG needs to contact George Hawks, 510-222-1408, or email .
Memorial Flag Case Project
We have Memorial Flag Cases, for a donation of $35 to the club, to families that have received a Military or Public Service Memorial Flag after the passing of a loved one. These cases will also be given out free to any local Fire or Police family member that is lost in the line of duty. Plans for these cases are on our club web site. Gordon Fry, 925-685-1676 is the Chairperson for this project. Call him if you know of someone that would like a Flag Case or would like some help building them.
Flag Cases were given to several local police and fire fighting families in the last couple of years. It is our honor to help in memories of these men who lost their lives in their community's service.
